Uganda’s long distance runner Victor Kiplangat on Tuesday won in the Atheltics category of the Fortebet Real Stars Monthly Sports Awards for the month of July. The event took place at Route 256 in Kololo, Kampala.
Kiplangat won gold in the men’s marathon of the ongoing Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games a few days ago after he posted a winning time of 2:10:55.
It was a brilliant moment for Uganda, too as it was the nation’s first men’s marathon gold medal in the history of the games. It was also Uganda’s first silverware in Birmingham.
To win the Fortebet monthly award, Kiplangat beat competition from among others Joshua Cheptegei who won gold in the men’s world (World Athletics) 10,000m category in Oregon last month.
Cheptegei, also the world record holder, led for large periods of the race and held off all challengers on the final lap at Eugene’s Hawyard Field to clock a winning time of 27min 27.43sec.
Jacob Kiplimo who’s currently in the mix at the Commonwealth Games was also nominated for the same. Last month he won bronze at the World Athletics 10,000m event which was topped by Cheptegei.
Oscar Chelimo was the other runner nominated in the athletics category. He won bronze in the 5,000m category of the World Athletics last month.
Meanwhile, in other categories, Umar Dauda and Hamza Lwanga who won the Fort Portal Rally took home the rally award.
In football, Amuri Mukisa was winner after he scored three goals from five games in July during the ongoing Masaza Cup tournament. He plays for Singo Ssaza team.
In Ludo, Daniel Wanyama of Namugongo Club who won the 2022 Individual Championship was crowned winner.
