Rays of Grace successfully defended the FUFA Primary Schools Championship (Odilo) after emerging Winners of the 2022 edition on Wednesday.

In the boys final played at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru, Rays of Grace from Buikwe district edged Paorihner Primary School from Agago District to claim the crown.

It should be noted that Rays of Grace won the inaugural edition held in 2019 before the outbreak of COVID-19 disrupted the next two years and thus the tournament could not be held.

The closely contested final ended goalless in normal time but Rays of Grace won the penalty shootout 5-4.

Coach Richard Kamanzi praised his players for showing composure throughout the tournament despite losing the opening game.

“We have had a good platform for the young boys to expose their talents and I want to thank FUFA for this initiative. I want to also thank my players for showing character and composure throughout the tournament. It has not been easy for us to win but the determination to keep pushing helped us.” He said.

Michael Kawooya and Abdulrahman Sudais both from Rays of Grace were named Most Valuable Player and best goalkeeper respectively

Joseph Langol from Paorihner Primary School took the top scorer gong with five goals.

Nansana Modern scooped the fair play award.

Both Rays of Grace and Paorihner will represent Uganda at the East Africa Games (FEASSA) in Arusha later this month.

The aforementioned two schools will be joined by Bombo UMEA and Habanom Academy who played the final in the girls’ category with the former emerging winners.
