The 2022/23 FUFA Women Super League (WSL) season will officially get underway on Saturday with reigning Champions She Corporate FC facing new comers Makerere University WFC.
The crunch tie between two sides affiliated to sister institutions of learning will be played at the Makerere Main Pitch.
In an unprecedented occasion, the two coaches and captains from both She Corporate and Makerere briefed the media on Friday in a joint press conference held at FUFA Complex, Mengo.
Coach Issa Hassan of She Corporate indicated his charges are ready for the new campaign and the ultimate target will be retain the league title.
“We are ready for the new season and my players are extremely prepared for the task ahead. I believe we are in the best shape and our target is get the new season on a high, starting with the game against Makerere on Saturday,” he said.
Hassan indicated that their expedition in the recently concluded CAF Women Champions League Zonal Qualifiers gave them good preparation ahead of the new season.
“We are fresh from the CAF Champions League Qualifiers and I believe my players are ahead in terms of fitness and we want to ride on that advantage in the opening games.” He added.
His counterpart, Fred Ndawula is aware of the challenges the League poses but he is confident his troops will perform well.
“We gave just returned to the top division but I have trust in my players to do well starting this Saturday against She Corporate. The top league is tough but we want to do well and our target is to finish in the top five.” He indicated.
Makerere were outstanding in the FUFA Women Elite League last season and dispatched Asubo Gafford Ladies 6-0 to lift the title.
She MAK skipper Yudaya Nalubega is unfazed by the fact that She Corporate are the reigning Champions and states they are ready to tame them come Saturday.
“We respect the fact that they are the defending Champions but that does not give them outright advantage. We are confident and ready to face them.” She said.
Naome Nagadya who captained She Corporate to triumph last season indicated the team still has its ultimate target set at winning the title.
The other matchday one games will be played on Sunday with Kampala Queens facing Asubo Gafford Ladies, Olila High School take on Lady Doves will Rines SS visit Uganda Martyrs.
