NBL playoffs: UCU Lady Canons, Nam Blazers still alive

JKL Lady Dolphins and City Oilers were to be crowned champions in the women’s and men’s divisions of the Tusker Lite National Basketball League (NBL) had they each won game five of the playoffs on Friday evening at the MTN Arena, Lugogo in Kampala.

Prior to the Friday games, JKL Lady Dolphins and City Oilers were both leading the best of seven series 3-1 over UCU Lady Canons and Nam Blazers respectively and needed just one win to earn a ‘gentleman’s sweep’ over their rivals but it didn’t go their way.

JKL Lady Dolphins who are women’s title holders lost 48-62 to university side UCU Lady Canons whilst City Oilers who have won the title for the past seven straight seasons lost 70-65 to new comers Nam Blazers but in over time.

The trophies were already displayed, halftime entertainment happened in anticipation of the coronation of JKL Lady Dolphins and City Oilers but they were forced to keep their champagne on ice at least until Sunday when game six will be happening and possibly then they will be able to display their victory attires emblazoned with gestures of victory.

In the women’s game, usual suspect Rose Akon guided UCU to victory, posting a game high 16 points, plus 15 rebounds and 1 assist.

Aziida Nabayunga had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 1 assist whilst Millicent Otieno also had a double of 11 points and 1 assist. Bridget Aber also put in a good show with 8 points and 13 rebounds.

In a losing effort, Hope Akello shot 11 points, 16 rebounds and 1 assist for JKL Lady Dolphins. Taundechia Oluoch had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

In the men’s game, Ben Komakech’s three-point shot with few seconds to play sent City Oilers to overtime but the Namuwongo based side was hard to crack. With scores 58-58 after four quarters, Blazers earned a 12-07 win in overtime.

Ariel Okall Okoll stood out for Nam Blazers shooting 19 points, 16 rebounds and 3 assists.

Deng Dikong managed a double double of 16 points and 11 rebounds but he also added 3 assists. Amisi Saidi shot 11 points and 4 rebounds.

Francis Azolibe was the only City Oilers player to post a double figure after shooting 15 points. He added 9 rebound and 1 assist.

As Uganda celebrates her 60th Independence on Sunday, 9th 2022, basketball fans will head to Lugogo for game six of the Tusker Lite sponsored playoffs.

JKL Lady Dolphins and City Oilers need wins to seal victory but UCU Lady Canons and Nam Blazers will undoubtedly seek to level matters and force game seven to ensure that matters are settled on Wednesday next week and we all head to off season.
