Joseph Cwinya-ai is the defending champion.

Event: 2022 Tusker Malt Uganda Amateurs Golf Open
Venue: Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, Kigo
Dates: 19-22 October

The cast for the opening round of the 2022 Tusker Malt Uganda Amateurs Golf Open is dominated by local players with few foreign entries. The four-day event is scheduled for 19-22 October at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa’s par-72 course in Kigo.

Largerly, it’s the Kenyans who give Ugadans a good run for their money in the amateur competition which is the main event of the championship. The two nations have always produced champions of this tournament.

However, this time round, most Kenyan players won’t be playing at this year’s Uganda Amateurs Golf Open because many of them will be playing at the Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship (45th edition) which will be happening at the same time (20-23 October) at Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort.

With a few Kenyan/foreign players set to participate in this year’s Uganda Amateurs Golf Open, this will give local players a chance to leave their mark at the tournament as they pursue professional status and for the national team players, it’s a good time to impress the coaches.

Defending champion, Joseph Cwinya-ai who’s also the Uganda national golf team captain is the highlight of the draws and he will tee-off at 9:00 a.m alongside John Paul Basabose and Frank Mugisa.

“I am set for the Tusker Malt Uganda Amateurs Golf Open. I am not under any sort of pressure because I will play against the course. I have done enough preparations and I believe I’m ready,” Cwinya-ai said ahead of tee-off.

Other Ugandans to watch out for include Godfrey Nsubuga, Bagalana Ibra, Joe Kasozi, last year’s day one leader Reagan Akena among others.

The Uganda Amateurs Golf Open (marking its 81st edition this year) which returns to Lake Victoria Serena for the second time since 2019 is a World Amateur Golf Ranking event.

The Amateur Open is the third event of the 2022 Tusker Malt Uganda Golf Open. The ladies and amateur events held earlier on were won by Martha Babirye and John Muchiri respectively.

After the Amateur Open, two more events will be played, that is; Pro-Am (25th) and Professional Open (26th-29th).

The lead sponsor of the tournament is Uganda Breweries Limited through the Tusker Malt Lager beer brand. Co-sponsors/partners are; Pepsi, Case Medical Care, Absa Bank, HK Properties including NBS Sport.
