Rugby Premier League side Jinja Hippos have vowed to crack a whip on hooliganism by deploying stewards during their home games at Dam Waters in Jinja.
This development comes after a Jinja Hippos fan (identified by the club) tried to strike a Stanbic Black Pirates player Desire Ayera during the last minutes of a league game between the two teams on Saturday at Dam Waters. The fan reacted following an incident between Ayera and Jinja Hippos player Gracious Makita.
Jinja Hippos via a missive have banned the fan from any club activities including attending their games for the remainder of the 2023 season but do not want to see the same incident occur again.
“We will also be providing more stewards during our home games for better crowd control going forward, to ensure this kind of incidents do not happen in the future,” the club said via a missive.
The club also urges its fans to respect and uphold the ethos and morals of rugby as a sport and as the game grows, the club intends to engage with both the new and old fans to ensure that such incidents don’t happen again.
After three games, Jinja Hippos are currently sixth on the 10-team table with five points off one win and two losses. They play Kobs on Saturday at Legends Grounds in Kampala.
