The Corporate League is marking 21 years of existence this year with the new season set to kick off on Sunday, 26th February 2023 at Kyadondo Sports Club in Kampala. The league will be happening during the last Sunday of every month.
After two decades of existence, the league now seeks to broaden its wings in terms of competition as well as geographically. The Source of the Nile Uganda Corporate Marathon, the Kids’ Corporate League are new additions to the league. Basketball is also set to be introduced. Also for the first time, the league is set to be played outside Kampala (regionally).
Dennis Mbidde – Managing Director of the Corporate League while addressing media during the new season launch on Wednesday at Hotel Africana in Kampala noted that the Source of the Nile Uganda Corporate Marathon will be held on 22nd April in Jinja whilst the Kids’ League will kick-off in June. Jinja and Northern Uganda will host some legs of the league.
“The Source of the Nile Uganda Corporate Marathon will be done for a cause. For instance we have discovered a need in Jinja referral Hospital of an improved cancer and heart institute. So we want to mobilize our 85 companies (in the league) to fundraise for such projects,” Mbidde noted.
“It has been put on the calendar of Uganda Marathons where we expect a minimum of 5000 people and over 80 companies participating. We’re fundraising for a health center 2 Hospital to upgrade it to Health center 4. The marathon will be held every year,” Mbidde added.
On the introduction of basketball, Mbidde says that basketball too is a corporate game and it will run co-currently with other disciplines. It will be mainly played by people who are 35 years and above who want to keep fit and healthy. Local basketball governing body FUBA has been engaged on the same.
Meanwhile, CEO’s Breakfast Awards Ceremony and fundraiser will be held at Sheraton Hotel on 7th July.
Meanwhile, in an attempt to weed out mercenaries, Corporate League Chairperson Diana Akello revealed that NSSF record and a National Identity Card will be required for all the participants. A letter from the company’s Human Resource Officer may be considered if the participant lacks one or all of the above.
Football remains the dominant sport in the league. However, other disciplines like athletics, volleyball, golf, swimming, tennis, table pool, tug of war are in the mix.
