Uganda ladies’ tennis team of Patience Athieno and Judith Nalukwago won both legs of the Oceans Blue Beach Tennis BT10 event, first by beating Madhieu Adhu and Faith Urasa of Kenya 7-5/6-3 in leg 1 of the event.
They went ahead to defeat Changawa Shufaa and Chepkemei Yego Stacy of Kenya 6-2/6-2 in the final of the second leg.
The event was held on Saturday, 18th and Sunday, 19th March 2023 at Buntwani Waterfront Park Malindi, Kenya.
Uganda was represented in the men’s category by Mugisha & Simon Ayella but the duo was beaten in the semi finals of both legs by the winning pair of top seeds Mohammad Fazal Khan and Navas Borja.
The events provide an opportunity to obtain ranking points in preparation for the ANOCA games in Bali, Indonesia (5-12 August 2023) and the Africa Beach Games in Hammamet Tunisia (24-30 June 2023).
Uganda Tennis Association joined the ITF Beach Tennis program in 2020 after recieving a grant form the ITF of equipment.
The first Beach Tennis event Uganda competed in Mpumalanga South Africa in May 2021 at the Africa World Beach Tennis Qualifiers which were won by South Africa.
Jonathan Mugisha, Moses Bashaasha, Patience Athieno and Sandra Khissa made up the team.
Beach Tennis and Wheelchair Tennis are the new programs that UTA joined in 2020 and are looking to expand participation and inclusion for all.
