2023 Rugby Premier League champions Stanbic Black Pirates have received a winning bonus of UGX 5,000,000 from their main sponsors Stanbic Bank Uganda.
This happened on Friday evening during the victory cocktail party hosted by Stanbic Bank at their head office at Crested Towers in the heart of Kampala City. The event was attended by the leadership, players and staff of the club plus representatives from the bank.
At the same event, the club presented the league winners’ trophy to Stanbic Bank and as well gave winners’ medals and framed photos to some of the representatives from the sponsor’s side.
Daniel Ogong who is the Head of Marketing and Communications at Stanbic Bank revealed that the winning bonus is mainly for the players’ welfare.
“The boys did very well…they are the ones who put their bodies on the line and we trust the club to do the right thing and we’ll leave it to the club to ensure that the bonus goes to the players,” Ogong said.
Ogong added that Stanbic Bank partnered with Pirates because the two parties share common values and the fans and team members carry themselves in a way that compliments the brand.
Andrew Mashanda who is the Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Uganda has urged the team to keep up with the good work throughout the rugby season with the National Sevens season and the Uganda Cup around the corner.
“We want you dominate!” Mashanda told the players adding that; “when I think of Stanbic Black Pirates I think of a partner and a friend, the one we trust…you are evangelists for Stanbic Bank and we want the game of rugby to grow in this country and we have chosen you to be that partner to help us grow the game.”
George Mbalu who is the Chairman Emeritus of the club noted that Stanbic Bank’s coming on board as sponsors is one of the best things to ever happen to Pirates.
“We applaud Stanbic Bank for coming on board. The sponsorship package has been good to us throughout the entire season. We in fact need to convince them to put in more money because we have more to win,” Mbalu said.
Head Coach Marvin Odongo has told his players that party time is over and it’s now time to fine-tune for the next phase of the rugby season as the side seeks to make a complete sweep.
“For a club like ours, the standard is very high and there is no room for mediocrity,” Odongo told his players adding that; “I would like to thank Stanbic Bank not only for the sponsorship but the fact that they also employ some of our players and family plus we are happy customers.”
Pirates won the 2023 Nile Special sponsored league two weeks ago after they beat Kobs 23-07 in the final game of the season at Legends Grounds in Kampala.
In March this year, Pirates received a shot in the arm after Stanbic Bank announced the extension of their partnership with the club for the next two years. At the press conference in Kampala, it was revealed that the Sea Robbers will receive UGX 80 Million a year.
