The Victoria Pearls (Uganda women’s cricket team) squad for the 9th edition of the Kwibuka T20 Tournament was named on Tuesday.
The squad of 14 includes three changes from the side that won the Victoria Series and the Capricorn Eagles Series earlier this year.
The new players in the squad are; Lorna Anyait, Malisa Ariokot, and Jimia Mohammad all of whom were part of the U-19 girls team last year.
Jimia Muhammad made her senior debut for the side last year on the tour to Namibia while Lorna Anyait and Malissa Ariokot will be making their senior debuts. Gloria Obukor, Sarah Akiteng, and Esther Iloku make way for the trio, and the changes are mostly enforced to give the youngsters some exposure at the tournament.
The Victoria Pearls have won the Kwibuka tournament twice (2014& 2016). The tournament will have four other nations which include hosts Rwanda, Nigeria, Botswana, and Kenya.
The tournament will run from June 8th – 18th and will have T20 international status. This will be the sixth time Uganda has been at the Kwibuka tournament since its inception.
The Kwibuka T20 Tournament is a women’s Twenty20 cricket tournament played annually in Rwanda since 2014. The tournament was originally named the Kwibuka Cricket for Peace tournament, and is played in remembrance of the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Initially the tournament featured exclusively East African nations, but in more recent editions has expanded to include teams from across Africa and beyond
