The Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon has been continuously getting sponsors/partners with the second staging of the annual event slated for this weekend (2nd September) in Kasese. The latest company to come on board as one of the sponsors of the event is Britam Uganda, a leading financial services group in Uganda with interests in insurance and asset management.
On Monday afternoon, Britam unveiled a sponsorship package worth UGX 66,500,000 (Sixty Six Million and Five Hundred Shillings) for the marathon. Of the total package, 16.5 million comes in cash while the other part of the sponsorship (50 million) comes in form of insurance that will cater for the liabilities for the people that will be at the event after the race.
“As Britam we are all about supporting communities. We know the impact that this marathon is going to make to the people of Uganda especially those in Kasese. We believe this marathon will improve on the hospitality sector, I’m told hotels in Kasese have been fully booked and there’s a lot that’s going to take place in terms of economic boom and activity so we are proudly associated,” Richard Mwebesa who is the General Manager at Britam Uganda said during at a press briefing at their offices in Nakasero, Kampala.
“We believe in sports and wellness that’s why we are looking forward to the event,” Mwebesa noted adding that 15 of their staff will participate in the marathon and will compete in the 21km and 42km categories. He also added that from the total insurance package, 1 million will go to each individual that will benefit from the package.
Amos Wekesa the Director of Equator Hikes, the organisers of the marathon says that Britam’s coming on board is a huge boost for the event because insurance is a very vital aspect of life.
“Insurance is a very important aspect of travel and we hope that whoever arrives in the country for the marathon is able to sign an insurance policy with Britam. Sports is engaging and challenging and the more it’s engaging and challenging, the more we need insurance,” Wekesa said after noting that they’re extremely excited to have Britam on board.
Wekesa also highlighted the economic impact of the marathon to the local businesses and even the surrounding areas. He has urged people in the area to capitalize on it economically but also actively participate in it.
Slated for 2nd September in Kasese, the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon will have runners competing in a 42km full marathon, a 21km half marathon and a 5km fun run.
Kits for the marathon are now available for pick up at Station Xpress, Shop GF26, Forest Mall Lugogo Bypass, Kembabazi Catering Centre in Naguru and the Marathon Grounds in Kasese from 30th August to 2nd September.
