The hockey fraternity in Uganda is in mourning following the passing of one of their own players, Innocent Mbabali. On Saturday night, news broke that the young player, who had a bright future in the sport, had died in Netherlands.
Mbabali who once plied his trade with local outfit Wananchi and the national team was a star in the sport of hockey and had already made a significant impact in his career. He also had stints in Italy and Kenya and was known for his speed, skill, and dedication to the game. It’s reported that he was preparing for another stint in the Italian Serie A1.
The news of his passing has sent shockwaves throughout the hockey fraternity, with players, coaches, and fans expressing their condolences and sadness on social media. Many have also shared photos and memories of the young player, highlighting how much he meant to them personally and to the wider hockey community.
In a statement, the Uganda Hockey Association confirmed the sad news and also expressed their grief in regard to the same.
“With sadness, Uganda Hockey has learnt of the passing of Legendary Innocent Mbabali. A Mentor, Leader and Exceptional Player, with insurmountable impact on our growth. We condole with the Family, Wananchi Sports Club and Hope Hockey Skills Foundation. A Pillar Has Fallen. God Bless His Soul,” Uganda Hockey social media missive read.
