Ugandan female running pair of Halimah Nakaayi and Winnie Nanyondo have failed to make it to the finals of the women’s 800m final of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after falling short in their respective semi finals on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Japan.

Only the top two runners from each semi final made it to the final round with Nakaayi and Nanyondo finishing eighth and fifth respectively.

Nakaayi trailed in semi final one with a time of 2:04.44 as Jamaica’s Natoya Goule and Great Britain’s Jemma Reekie finished first and second respectively with times of 1:59.57 and 1:59.77 to make it to the finals.

Nanyondo who was seeded in semi final three finished fifth with a time of 1:59.84 as Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson and China’s Chunyin Wang made it to the final round after finishing first and second respectively with times of 1:59.12 and 1:59.14.

Nakaayi and Nanyondo exit means that Uganda only has two medals at this year’s Olympic Games following the triumph of Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo on Friday when they claimed silver and bronze respectively in the men’s 10,000m finals on Friday.

The Olympic Games will wind down next weekend and Uganda’s hopes of silverware still remains in track events.
