FUFA has announced the appointment of Mashood Ssali as the new Referees’ Development Manager, effective February 1, 2025.

The decision comes as part of FUFA’s ongoing implementation of its Technical Master Plan, which aims to enhance football standards in Uganda.

Ssali, a celebrated referee with 24 years of experience, including a decade as a FIFA-accredited official, recently retired from active refereeing on January 6, 2025.

He takes over the position from Egesa Samuel, who held the role since 2010 and exited following the expiry of his contract.

In his new capacity, Ssali will oversee refereeing development under the Football Development Department at the FUFA Secretariat.

He will collaborate closely with the FUFA Referees Standing Committee to promote the growth of referees at all levels, from grassroots to elite football.

Speaking about his appointment, Ssali expressed his gratitude and commitment to advancing refereeing in Uganda.

“On several occasions, I have listened to the FUFA President, Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim, explain the Technical Master Plan, which highlights life after football. This initiative focuses on reintegrating retired football players into roles that contribute to the sport. Today, it involves refereeing, and I am honored that after 24 years on the field as a referee, I can now contribute to developing others. This is a teamwork-driven role, and I am committed to meeting its expectations,” Ssali said.

A storied career

Mashood Ssali boasts an impressive resume, holding a Master’s degree in Marketing and having undertaken various football-related studies, including:

FAMACO I (April 2024)

FAMACO II (August 2024)

FUFA Match General Coordinator Training

His extensive experience and academic background position him as a key figure in FUFA’s vision for improving refereeing standards.

This appointment marks a significant milestone in FUFA’s mission to align with its Technical Master Plan, ensuring Uganda’s referees are equipped to excel on both domestic and international stages.
