As the countdown to the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally 2025 intensifies, the spirit of competition across East Africa is reaching fever pitch. A formidable lineup of six Kenyan rally crews has confirmed participation, reigniting the long-standing motorsport rivalry between Uganda and its neighbors.
Leading the Kenyan charge is the duo of Issa Amwari and celebrated co-driver Denis Mwenda. Mwenda, a fan favorite in Uganda since his performance in the 2014 edition behind the wheel of a Toyota Sprinter, will now navigate the powerful Mitsubishi Evo X alongside Amwari. Their return is a strong statement of Kenya’s ambitions this season.
The rally, scheduled to take place in Mbarara — a motorsport hub famed for its scenic but punishing rally routes — is expected to draw huge crowds and deliver thrilling action. The terrain’s unique mix of fast straights, sharp bends, and rough stretches will provide a stern test for all competitors.
Rwanda is also expected to add spice to the competition, with two elite drivers reportedly finalizing their entries. While their participation is yet to be confirmed officially, their potential inclusion would further raise the rally’s stakes.
Uganda’s top guns are ready to defend home soil. Ponsiano Lwakataka will roll out in his trusted Subaru N12 “Musota,” while reigning national champion Yasin Nasser is prepping his Ford Fiesta Rally2 for another title charge. Rally fans are also eager to witness the return of Duncan Mubiru “Kikankane,” whose aggressive driving style always electrifies the stages.
