The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has appointed SC Villa’s Morley Byekwaso and Vipers SC’s Fred Muhumuza as the head coaches for the Uganda Cranes team that will participate in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The announcement was made on Wednesday ahead of the tournament, which kicks off on August 2, 2025. The event will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania under the Pamoja East Africa banner.
In a statement, FUFA confirmed:
“Uganda National Team FUFA is pleased to announce the appointment of the following coaching panel for the Uganda National Team participating in the CHAN 2024 tournament… The coaching panel comprises Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso. Both coaches will be supervised and monitored by Uganda Cranes Head Coach Paul Put throughout the team’s participation in the tournament.”
The rest of the technical bench and full squad are expected to be announced in due course.
Byekwaso and Muhumuza are no strangers to working together. The pair previously took charge of the Cranes for friendly matches against Mali and Zambia in October 2023 following the departure of then-head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojević.
CHAN 2024 will mark Uganda’s seventh appearance at the continental tournament, which features only players active in their domestic leagues. The Cranes previously participated in the 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022 editions.
Uganda has been drawn in Group C alongside Algeria, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger — a competitive group that will test the newly appointed coaching duo.
