Uganda’s junior golfers are in high spirits as they prepare to tee off at the 2026 All Africa Junior Team Championship (AAJTC), set for Tuesday at the prestigious Windsor Golf & Country Club.
The Ugandan contingent, featuring both boys and girls teams, will be among 14 nations competing over the demanding 7,100-yard course, widely known for punishing errant shots and rewarding precision off the tee. Keeping the ball on the fairway will be critical for success.
The team heads into the championship with a blend of experience and confidence, with all players having previously competed at this level. Sources within the camp say the golfers are eager to test themselves against the continent’s finest.
Uganda faces stiff competition from regional and continental powerhouses including Kenya, Zambia, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Ghana. Other participating nations are Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritius, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and South Africa.
Team captain Peter Mayende will be one to watch after showcasing impressive form at the recent Victoria Cup held in Entebbe.
Weather conditions could also play a role in the tournament, with recent rains in Nairobi leaving the course wet and forecasts suggesting possible showers during the competition days. Team Uganda has factored these conditions into their preparations ahead of Monday’s official practice round.
The championship will be contested over 54 holes in a stroke play format based on gross scores. For the boys, the best three scores each day will count towards the team total, while the girls’ team will rely on their top two scores. Notably, the tournament does not permit caddies, placing added emphasis on players’ decision-making and course management.
Beyond continental glory, the stakes are even higher as the event doubles as a qualifier for the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup scheduled to take place in Japan later this year.
Uganda Golf Union President Dr Jackson Were is also expected to join the team in Nairobi, where he will hold strategic engagements with The R&A and the Africa Golf Confederation on the sidelines of the championship.
