Team Uganda are revved up ahead of the opening match against hosts Zimbabwe at the 2026 CAF African Schools Football Championship scheduled for today, April 6th in Harare.
The Ugandan representatives, St Mary’s Boarding School Kitende, held a one-hour session at Gateway High School on Easter Sunday, focusing on tactical organisation, defensive structure, attacking movements, and recovery drills.
The session marked the team’s last preparations before their Group A opener scheduled for Monday, April 6, where they will face Zimbabwe in the tournament’s opening fixture.
Head coach Hassan Zungu expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness, noting that the players are both mentally and physically prepared for the challenge.
“We have so far held three training sessions since we arrived in Harare. The players are in the best shape mentally and physically to tussle against the host country in the official opening match. The response from the players has been so good and we are ready for the challenge,” Zungu said.
He added that while the ultimate goal is to win the championship, the immediate focus is on delivering a strong performance in the opening game.
“The target is to win the championship, but it all starts with performing well in the opening match,” he added.
Uganda is drawn in a competitive Group A alongside hosts Zimbabwe, Morocco, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. After the opener, Uganda will face DR Congo and Morocco on Tuesday, April 7.
The team travelled to Zimbabwe under the leadership of Hajji Twahil Kitezaala, a member of the USSSA Executive Committee. The delegation also includes Ministry of Education and Sports commissioners Duncan Mugumya and Brighton Barugahare.
The tournament, which brings together top school teams from across Africa, also features a development component for match officials. Uganda is represented in this category by Isaac Ssentongo, who was selected through the CAF Young Referees’ Programme.
In the previous edition, Tanzania emerged as the boys’ champions, while Ghana claimed the girls’ title.
