Mburo Blasters captain Riazat Ali Shah produced a breathtaking unbeaten century to inspire a record-breaking run chase, while Kyoga Avengers claimed their first victory of the tournament on an action-packed second day of the Great Lakes Men’s T20 Championship at Lugogo Cricket Oval.
The day’s opening fixture saw Kyoga Avengers defeat Victoria Strikers by 13 runs in a low-scoring encounter dominated by disciplined bowling performances.
After being put in to bat, Kyoga Avengers were bowled out for 129 in 18.5 overs. Ronald Lutaaya provided a flying start with a quickfire 27 off just 10 deliveries, while Ismail Munir anchored the innings with a composed 34 off 29 balls.
Victoria Strikers’ bowlers kept the pressure on throughout the innings, with Pius Oloka leading the attack with four wickets. Christopher Kidega claimed three wickets, while Kenneth Waiswa added two as the Strikers repeatedly broke partnerships to restrict the Avengers.
In reply, Victoria Strikers suffered a disastrous start, losing three wickets for just one run in the opening over. Perry Wazombe attempted to revive the chase with a patient 59 off 60 balls, while Ahurra Amos contributed 20 runs, but the innings never gathered enough momentum.
Kyoga’s bowlers maintained tight lines and regular breakthroughs, with Juma Miyaji and Gerald Olipa picking up two wickets each. Their efforts restricted Victoria Strikers to 116 for 9 in 18.5 overs, sealing a deserved 13-run victory for the Avengers.
Munir’s all-round influence and crucial knock of 34 earned him the Player of the Match award.
The afternoon clash between Bunyonyi Warriors and Mburo Blasters delivered one of the most memorable batting displays of the tournament, as Mburo chased down a daunting target of 222 with remarkable ease.
Bunyonyi Warriors had earlier posted an imposing 221 for 5 after an explosive batting performance. Obuya Robinson led the charge with a sensational 87 off just 38 deliveries, striking six fours and eight sixes. Paul Mulongo added 49 from 30 balls, while Anas Baig chipped in with 20 off 11 deliveries.
Late cameos from Alijuna Fortunate, who remained unbeaten on 24, and Kyewuta Cosmas, unbeaten on 14 from only six balls, lifted the Warriors to one of the highest totals of the competition so far.
Despite the onslaught, David Wabwire impressed with figures of 3 for 29, while Mburo captain Riazat Ali Shah claimed two wickets to keep the target within reach.
What followed was a batting exhibition of the highest order.
After Fahad Mutagana smashed 21 off just nine deliveries at the top of the order, Charles Musemeza and Riazat Ali Shah combined for an unbeaten 184-run partnership that completely dismantled the Warriors’ bowling attack.
Musemeza struck a magnificent 85 not out from 45 balls, including 11 fours and five sixes. However, the spotlight belonged to Shah, whose unbeaten 100 came from just 38 deliveries in a devastating display of power hitting.
The Mburo skipper smashed six fours and 10 sixes as he reached his century in spectacular fashion, leaving the Warriors’ bowlers with no answers.
Mburo Blasters raced to 222 for 1 in only 15.2 overs, completing one of the fastest and highest successful run chases in the tournament’s history. Jonathan Nyiiro claimed the only wicket to fall during the innings.
Shah’s unbeaten century earned him the Player of the Match award and propelled Mburo Blasters to the top of the standings after two days of competition.
