Kyoga Avengers strengthened their hold on top spot in the Great Lakes Men’s T20 standings with a commanding five-wicket victory over Mburo Blasters, while Victoria Strikers secured their first win of the tournament by defeating Bunyonyi Warriors at Lugogo Cricket Oval on Sunday.
The Day Four action produced two significant results that further shaped the competition standings, with Kyoga maintaining their unbeaten record and Victoria finally getting off the mark after a challenging start to the tournament.
In the morning fixture, Mburo Blasters posted a competitive 155 for 7 after being put in to bat by Kyoga Avengers.
Charles Musemeza anchored the innings with a fluent 54 off 38 deliveries, striking five fours and three sixes, while Suleman Sharif provided valuable support with 41 from 30 balls. Brian Asaba added 19 runs and Edwin Nuwagaba chipped in with 14.
Kyoga’s bowling attack shared the workload effectively, with Richard Agamire claiming two wickets. Juma Miyaji, Dan Keith Amani and Gerald Olipa also contributed crucial breakthroughs to keep the Blasters within reach.
In response, Kyoga overcame the early dismissal of Ronald Lutaaya to produce another composed run chase. Player of the Match Gerald Olipa set the platform with a blistering 48 from just 27 balls, including seven boundaries and a six.
Robert Owili maintained the momentum with a quickfire 36 off 23 deliveries before Cyrus Kakuru anchored the middle order with an unbeaten 28. Captain Juma Miyaji then accelerated the scoring with a decisive 31 off only 15 balls, striking four fours and two sixes as Kyoga reached 159 for 5 in 16.3 overs.
The victory ensured Kyoga Avengers remained unbeaten after four matches, extending their lead at the summit of the standings.
The afternoon encounter saw Victoria Strikers register their first victory of the tournament with a five-wicket win over Bunyonyi Warriors.
After electing to bat, Bunyonyi were bowled out for 116 in 17.1 overs despite useful contributions from Robinson Obuya and Simon Okecho, who both scored 29 runs. Paul Mulongo added 16, but regular wickets prevented the Warriors from building substantial partnerships.
Victoria’s bowling attack was spearheaded by Christopher Kidega and Pius Oloka, who claimed three wickets apiece. Kidega returned impressive figures of 3 for 10, while Oloka delivered an equally effective spell of 3 for 9 from his four overs.
Chasing a modest target of 117, Victoria made a steady start before captain Kenneth Waiswa anchored the innings with 35 off 35 deliveries. Kidega contributed a quick 15, while Oloka capped an outstanding all-round performance with an unbeaten 23.
Amos Ahurra struck the winning boundary as Victoria reached 120 for 5 in 16 overs to seal a much-needed victory.
Oloka was named Player of the Match for his decisive contribution with both bat and ball.
Following Day Four’s results, Kyoga Avengers lead the standings with eight points, ahead of Mburo Blasters on four points. Victoria Strikers and Bunyonyi Warriors are level on two points each.
Attention now turns to today, Tuesday’s fixtures, with Bunyonyi Warriors facing Mburo Blasters in the morning before Victoria Strikers take on table leaders Kyoga Avengers in the afternoon clash.
