South Africa booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 for the first time in the nation’s history after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final Group A match on Tuesday.
A second-half goal from Thapelo Maseko proved decisive as Hugo Broos’ side delivered a disciplined and determined performance to secure a landmark achievement on football’s biggest stage.
Entering the match knowing that only a win would keep their qualification hopes alive, Bafana Bafana rose to the occasion against a South Korean side that required only a draw to advance.
South Africa survived an early scare when Aubrey Modiba produced a crucial goal-line clearance inside the opening two minutes. The defender denied Kim Min-jae after a dangerous corner delivered by Lee Kang-in threatened to put South Korea ahead.
As the first half progressed, South Africa grew in confidence and began to create opportunities of their own. Relebohile Mofokeng, Thapelo Maseko and Evidence Makgopa combined effectively in attack, while Thalente Mbatha came closest to breaking the deadlock with a powerful effort that forced an excellent save from goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.
The teams went into halftime level at 0-0, with qualification hanging in the balance.
The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute through a moment of quality from South Africa’s attacking unit. Substitute Tshepang Moremi made an immediate impact after entering the match, threading a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Maseko. The winger cut onto his left foot before calmly placing his shot into the bottom corner, sparking celebrations among the South African supporters.
The goal dramatically altered the Group A standings and placed South Africa firmly on course for qualification.
South Korea responded by dominating possession in search of an equaliser, but South Africa’s defence stood firm. Captain Ronwen Williams led by example, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi marshalled the backline superbly as Bafana Bafana repelled wave after wave of pressure.
Despite South Korea’s control of the ball, clear-cut chances remained scarce as South Africa produced a defensive masterclass during the closing stages.
