Cricket Uganda (CU) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the return of former Uganda U-19 and Uganda A captain Pascal Murungi to competitive cricket following the outcome of an independent disciplinary appeal that revised his original suspension.
The clarification comes after inquiries from members of the cricket fraternity, commercial partners and other stakeholders regarding Murungi’s eligibility to participate in cricket-related activities.
Murungi, who was initially handed a three-year ban after being found liable for breaches of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code for Participants (2024), successfully appealed the decision before an independent three-member Adhoc Disciplinary Appeals Committee.
The appeals panel, chaired by Moses Mwase alongside Robert Okot and Leon Ssenyange, found that procedural defects had occurred during the original disciplinary hearing. However, the committee upheld that Murungi had breached Article 2.4.3 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code by failing to report a corrupt approach.
In its ruling, the committee stated that while procedural irregularities were established, sufficient evidence existed to confirm the anti-corruption violation relating to the failure to disclose a reportable corrupt approach.
After reviewing the evidence, the Appeals Committee replaced the original sanction with a revised penalty of one year of ineligibility from cricket-related activities, with six months of the suspension suspended. The committee also ordered that Murungi receive credit for the period already served under provisional suspension from December 18, 2025.
As part of the revised sanction, Murungi is required to attend mandatory Anti-Corruption education sessions every month until the completion of his sanction, in addition to participating in future integrity training programmes organised by Cricket Uganda.
Following implementation of the Appeals Committee’s operative decision and the credit for time already served, Murungi became eligible to resume competitive cricket under the conditions set by the committee.
The 25-year-old has already returned to action, making his competitive comeback on June 21, 2026, for Ceylon Lions against his former club, Aboojo. He marked his return by scoring 34 runs off 35 deliveries, helping Ceylon Lions secure a 23-run victory.
