Ronald Rugumayo heads into the inaugural Pearl of Africa-Sunshine Development Tour (POA-SunDev) tournament in rich form as he bids for a remarkable fifth consecutive victory.
The Ugandan professional has been virtually unstoppable in recent weeks, building momentum with a string of impressive performances that have already seen him claim three major victories.
Rugumayo captured his maiden Uganda Professional Golf Open title at the Uganda Golf Club earlier this month before following it up with another dominant display at the MTN Pro Tees at Entebbe Club last week.
The soft-spoken golfer sealed the MTN Pro Tees title in emphatic fashion, closing with back-to-back rounds of 64 to finish seven strokes clear of the field on the par-71 Entebbe course.
He now turns his attention to the inaugural POA-SunDev tournament, which gets underway at Entebbe on Thursday following a PRO-AM round on Wednesday.
Rugumayo has already earned Shs39 million in prize money from victories in the ABSA Pro-Am, Uganda Open and MTN Pro Tees, but he remains hungry for another strong showing on home soil.
“My first two days in Entebbe last week were a challenge because of the emotions of winning the Open, but once I settled, it helped me play some very good golf,” Rugumayo said.
Victory this week would complete an extraordinary run of five successive tournament wins for Rugumayo. Before his triumphs at the Uganda Open and MTN Pro Tees, he had also won the Watoto Golf tournament and the UGC Ladies Open.
However, he will face a strong field at Entebbe, with several established professionals expected to challenge for the $20,000 (about Shs78 million) prize purse.
Among the notable entrants are Celestine Nsanzuwera, Greg Snow, Dismas Indiza, Grace Kasango, Godwin Okoko and Sunday Olapade. A contingent of South African professionals will also compete, including Eswatini’s Nobuhle Dlamini.
The tournament will also feature a Fun Village for guests, adding an entertainment element to the four-day golfing spectacle.
