Arnold Vula’s first international goal was enough for Uganda to defeat Libya 1-0 on Tuesday at Hoima City Stadium and move to the top of Group H in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Cranes secured victory at home thanks to Vula’s stoppage-time strike at the end of the first half, maintaining their perfect start to the qualifying campaign.
With the first half seemingly heading towards a goalless conclusion, Vula broke the deadlock in the second minute of added time.
The forward’s goal, his first for Uganda, proved decisive as the Cranes held on after the break to claim all three points.
The result adds to Uganda’s strong start in Group H. The Cranes have already secured their place at the 2027 AFCON as co-hosts, but they continue to compete in the qualifying campaign.
Libya remain without a victory after the opening two rounds of qualifying.
The Mediterranean Knights began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Botswana before suffering defeat to Uganda.
Earlier on Tuesday, Botswana also drew 2-2 with Tunisia, leaving the group finely poised.
Uganda now sit at the summit of Group H, while Tunisia are third and Libya remain bottom. With Uganda already assured of qualification as hosts, the battle for the group’s remaining qualification place is set to intensify in the next rounds.
For Libya, meanwhile, the focus will be on securing their first win and keeping their qualification hopes alive.
