Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo will lock horns in a highly anticipated Round of 16 clash at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, when they meet on Tuesday at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat. With both teams in impressive form, the encounter promises intensity, quality and a battle for a coveted place in the quarter-finals.
Former champions Algeria arrive as one of the tournament’s standout sides. Winners of the 2019 AFCON, Les Fennecs cruised through the group stage with a perfect record, winning all three matches and conceding just one goal. Their resurgence marks a sharp contrast to the struggles they endured in the years following their continental triumph in Egypt.
Led by captain Riyad Mahrez, Algeria have combined attacking flair with defensive solidity, scoring seven goals in three matches. Their balance across the pitch has made them firm favourites for the title, and history also appears to be on their side. Algeria are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with DR Congo, recording three wins and four draws.
However, DR Congo have proven they are more than capable of challenging the tournament’s heavyweights. Les Léopards finished second in Group D with seven points from two wins and a draw, narrowly missing out on top spot on goal difference. Defensively disciplined, they have conceded just once so far—against Senegal—and kept clean sheets in two matches while scoring five goals.
Two-time AFCON champions, DR Congo are aiming to build on their best recent performance, a third-place finish in 2015. Under the guidance of coach Sébastien Desabre, the team has developed a strong competitive edge, anchored by experienced attacking figures such as Cédric Bakambu and Gaël Kakuta.
Both coaches have acknowledged the magnitude of the occasion. Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković praised the Congolese side’s structure and attacking threat, particularly down the right flank, noting their positive approach and momentum. Meanwhile, Desabre emphasized his team’s comfort with pressure, describing the match as an important opportunity for growth and experience at the highest level.
Statistically, the fixture has been closely contested. The teams have met seven times, with Algeria winning three and four matches ending in draws. Notably, the last four encounters have all finished level, including three recent 1-1 friendly results. Algeria’s last victory over DR Congo in a competitive AFCON match dates back to 1988.
