Uganda’s Toyota Buffaloes are set for a defining moment tomorrow, Saturday, as they take on Kenya’s Menengai Oilers in their historic Enterprise Cup debut at ASK Showground, famously known as “The Refinery.”
The Kyadondo-based side held a focused captains’ run on Friday at the match venue, fine-tuning preparations ahead of the 3:00 PM kickoff. Having wrapped up a demanding six-week stretch in the Uganda Rugby Premiership, the Buffaloes arrived in Nakuru on Thursday, travelling with a 25-man squad, with 23 players expected to make the matchday lineup.
Currently sitting second on the Premiership table with 24 points—level with leaders Stanbic Black Pirates—the Buffaloes come into the clash in strong form. However, the encounter presents a sterner test against unfamiliar opposition on foreign soil.
The team boasts a balanced mix of youth and experience, with a forward pack expected to set the platform and a dynamic backline ready to ignite attacking play—an approach that has underpinned their domestic success so far this season.
Despite the slightly cooler conditions in Nakuru, the mood in camp remains upbeat, with players showing sharpness and focus during the final training session.
Their opponents, Menengai Oilers, will be equally motivated, especially with home advantage. The Oilers finished third in the Kenya Cup regular season, behind Kabras Sugar and KCB Rugby, and will be keen to defend their turf in what marks the first-ever meeting between the two sides.
With both teams eager to make a statement, Saturday’s clash promises high-intensity rugby action. For the Buffaloes, a strong performance could signal their intent on the regional stage and mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
