Crucial Group G clash, Uganda vs Somalia live on DStv and GOtv

Tonight, the Uganda Cranes host Somalia at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole in a crucial Group G fixture, that could prove decisive for the Cranes’ hopes of making history. For the first time ever, Uganda finds itself within touching distance of a World Cup playoff spot.

Uganda’s World Cup qualifying Group G W is fiercely competitive. Algeria top the table with 18 points, having already qualified. Trailing behind, Uganda and Mozambique both sit on 12 points separated only by a goal difference of +3, with Guinea and Botswana also lurking for a runner-up spot.

Only the group winner qualifies automatically; the four best runners-up across all CAF groups advance to a further playoff round. A victory over Somalia would strengthen the Cranes grip on second place and keep them in contention for one of those coveted playoff spots.

The Cranes return to Namboole with confidence following their 4-0 victory over Mozambique last Friday, while Somalia lost 3-0 to Guinea that same day. Uganda’s home record in World Cup qualifiers is formidable. At Namboole, the Cranes have been almost untouchable in World Cup qualifying losing just once in 19 home games and keeping nine clean sheets in their last eleven.

Against Somalia, they have dominated head-to-head with 17 wins, three draws, and a solitary loss in 21 meetings. Super Sport will be relaying the 7:00pm fixture on SuperSport Africa HD 1 (Channel 227 on DStv and Channel 363 on GOtv).

Somalia, by contrast return to Namboole as decided underdogs. The Ocean Stars have struggled throughout the qualifiers managing just three goals while conceding 14. Their only point came from a gritty 0-0 draw against Guinea, but losses to Algeria (3-1), Mozambique (2-1), Botswana (3-1) and that 1-0 defeat to Uganda have kept them bottom of the group table standing.

Somalia’s squad relies on domestic talent and a few diaspora players, with midfielder Mohamed Omar expected to lead the line. Goalkeeper Abdirahman Mohamud Jama who has kept his side competitive in matches that might have otherwise have been runaway defeats has also been a rare bright spot for the team.

For Uganda, eyes will again be on striker Rogers Mato, the Crane’s leading scorer in the qualifiers with three goals. His pace and sharp finishing tore Mozambique apart last week and supporters will be expecting him to deliver once more.

For Somalia, containing Allan Okello’s creativity will be paramount, the youngster was instrumental in the Mozambique game where he scored and assisted twice. Tactically, the Cranes are expected to dominate possession and press high, exploiting Somalia’s vulnerability on the counter.

The stakes for Uganda could not be higher. With Algeria already confirmed as group winners, the fight for second place has become a fierce battle involving Uganda, Mozambique, Guinea, and Botswana. With three matches remaining after tonight against Botswana, Guinea and a rematch with Algeria, the Cranes are well-positioned for at least a playoff spot.

A victory over Somalia followed by points against Botswana and Guinea, could secure that runner-up position. Get your Ka Weekie subscription for as low as UGX 5,000 on GOtv and UGX 5,500 on DStv to enjoy the match!
