Joseph Cwinya-ai and Peace Kabasweka emerged as the masters of the course during the President’s Cup final held at Kigo, sealing commanding victories in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
Cwinya-ai seized the initiative early against Andrew Ssekibejja in the men’s final and never let it slip. Despite Ssekibejja’s best efforts, including a magnificent eagle on the par-5 13th hole, Cwinya-ai maintained control and sealed a 3&2 win on the 16th hole. His victory made him the first men’s gross amateur match play champion of the President’s Cup.
“This tournament is going to be a permanent one on the calendar of the Uganda Golf Union,” said UGU President Dr. Jackson Were, who reaffirmed the Cup’s future, noting its solid foundation and promising contribution to the golf community.
Cwinya-ai’s journey to the final saw him beat Joseph Reagan Akena in the semi-finals, while Ssekibejja advanced after receiving a walkover when his opponent, Titus Okong, failed to show up. In the final, however, Cwinya-ai showed no signs of fatigue and handled the pressure like a seasoned champion.
In the women’s final, Peace Kabasweka, the overwhelming favourite, reaffirmed her position as the country’s top female golfer. She comfortably defeated Meron Kyomugisha, closing the game on the 16th hole to win 4&2. For her victory, Kabasweka walked away with a cash prize of Shs700,000, while Cwinya-ai earned Shs1.2 million for his triumph.
The event’s Guest of Honour, Dr. Amos Nzeiyi, praised the role of the private sector and government in supporting golf and sports tourism. Nzeiyi, who was part of a delegation accompanying visiting golfers from Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa, emphasized the significance of such tournaments in strengthening Uganda’s sports profile.
Meanwhile, Joseph Louis Luyima emerged the winner in the subsidiary category, returning 45 points to claim a trophy, a JW Golf Reserve bottle, and a Stanbic Bank gift pack.
