Uganda’s top golfing talent lit up the fairways of Kitante as the 2025 Absa Captain’s Bell Tournament concluded with thrilling performances across all categories.
Joseph Cwinyai, Uganda’s national amateur standout, stole the spotlight with a jaw-dropping display that saw him tie the course record with an opening round of 63. His consistent brilliance over three rounds (63, 71, 66) gave him a 54-hole total of 200 — a performance that secured him the Men’s Gross Amateur title and UGX 2,040,000.
In the professional ranks, veteran golfer Deo Akope reaffirmed his class with a commanding total of 277 (-11) across four rounds, comfortably clinching the top spot and taking home UGX 3,780,000, the lion’s share of the UGX 20 million prize pool.
The Ladies Gross Amateur title went to Peace Kabasweka of Toro Club, who put together rounds of 76, 77, and 81 to edge out the competition. Her total of 234 earned her UGX 800,000 and applause from all corners of the gallery.
Other notable winners included Mark Namanya, who claimed the Kitante Cup, while Peter Tumusiime emerged as the Club Championship winner, showcasing consistency and skill throughout the tournament.
In the Senior Men’s Gross Amateur category, Joseph Bagabo stood out with a strong performance to secure the title.
Side bet prizes added an extra layer of excitement. Jenny Tumwesigye was named Piga Mingi winner, while Nampewo Juliya Joan and David Sekitoleko claimed the Nearest to Pin titles for the ladies and men, respectively. The Longest Drive accolades went to Akol Alexis (Ladies) and Charles Mubiru (Men).
The subsidiary event also delivered moments of brilliance. Matthew Nviiri was named Guest Winner, while rising stars Arianna Bholim and Gabriel Amani triumphed in the junior girls and boys categories, respectively.
Their victories were celebrated during the lively 19th Hole Experience, where prizes including Titleist Pro V1 sleeves, duffel bags, umbrellas, and shoe tote bags were presented by Absa Bank Uganda executives and event partners.
Speaking at the 19th Hole experience, Absa MD David Wandera said, “As we support this tournament for the 7th year running, Absa’s UGX 179 million investment this year reflects our deep commitment to growing golf in Uganda, nurturing talent and celebrating moments that bring us together as a community. Today’s UGX 20 million professional prize kitty is our way of rewarding the excellence we have witnessed here.”
The 19th hole celebration was further spiced up by a live performance from the legendary Afrigo Band, whose timeless music added energy and nostalgia to an already festive evening.
