KOBs Rugby Club has entered a new chapter following the election of a new Executive Committee at its annual meeting held on Sunday at the Nob View Hotel in Ntinda. The leadership transition signals a renewed drive to restore the club’s competitiveness on the field while strengthening its long-term institutional foundations.
At the helm of the new administration is Darren Rutagwera, who was elected Chairperson after previously serving as Vice Chairperson. He will be deputized by Simon Peter Kasito, with Richard Mutabazi taking up the role of Secretary. Muriel Aloka Atai continues as Treasurer, maintaining her position after overseeing a period marked by improved financial discipline.
The committee is further strengthened by Edwin Ssempebwa, who will represent the players, and Brian Odong, who has been appointed Director of Rugby to steer the club’s technical and rugby development agenda.
Speaking after his election, Rutagwera acknowledged the difficulties the club has encountered in recent seasons but expressed optimism about the road ahead. He said the new committee is focused on improving performance by strengthening the coaching structure, appointing the right people in key roles, and assembling a balanced and competitive squad.
Rutagwera also highlighted financial sustainability as one of the major challenges facing modern rugby clubs. He revealed that KOBs is actively pursuing targeted sponsorship partnerships to support its competitive ambitions and ensure long-term stability.
Beyond on-field performance, the new leadership is keen to deepen the club’s engagement with its community, emphasizing that KOBs’ strength extends beyond match results. Rebuilding the club’s proud culture and restoring a winning mentality within the next 12 to 18 months remains a central objective of the new administration.
Rutagwera stressed the importance of continuity in the treasury, improved communication through the secretariat, and the strategic addition of a Director of Rugby to drive technical growth across all levels of the club.
Founded in 1963, KOBs is one of Uganda’s most successful rugby clubs, boasting 13 Premiership titles, nine Uganda Cup victories, and multiple National 7s championships. The club is currently celebrating its diamond jubilee.
