Uganda’s journey at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 has quickly turned into a story of resilience, revival, and renewed belief.
After a disappointing 3–0 loss to Algeria in their opening match in Kampala, the Cranes roared back with two commanding wins that reignited their campaign and put them within reach of a historic quarter-final berth.
A 3–0 triumph over Guinea was followed by a 2–0 victory against Niger at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium, lifting Uganda to the top of their group. Their resurgence has been anchored on tactical discipline, relentless pressing, and ruthless efficiency in front of goal.
While the collective performance has impressed, five standout players have been the heartbeat of this revival.
Joel Mutakubwa – The Commanding Captain
The skipper and goalkeeper has been Uganda’s backbone. Even in the opening defeat, his saves kept the scoreline respectable. Against Guinea, he marshalled the defence with authority, while his performance versus Niger – capped by a match-defining close-range save – earned him the TotalEnergies Man of the Match award. Two consecutive clean sheets highlight his leadership and shot-stopping value.
Allan Okello – The Midfield Orchestrator
Okello has been the creative spark of Uganda’s resurgence. He scored from the spot and dictated tempo against Guinea. Against Niger, he showed resilience by bouncing back from a missed penalty to score with a header before setting up the second goal. His ability to control matches and deliver in big moments makes him the Cranes’ heartbeat.
Reagan Mpande – The Relentless Engine
Mpande’s tireless running and tactical awareness have made him the link between defence and attack. His header broke the deadlock against Guinea, while his aggressive pressing against Niger created chances, including the foul that led to a penalty. Even when not on the scoresheet, his impact is felt in Uganda’s midfield dominance.
Joel Sserunjogi – The Wing Menace
Sserunjogi has tormented defences with his pace and directness. He assisted the opener against Guinea and scored a thunderous goal versus Niger after combining with Okello. Though suspended for the next game due to yellow card accumulation, his influence has already been massive.
Hilary Mukundane – The Rock at the Back
Quiet but vital, Mukundane has brought stability to Uganda’s defence. Strong in the air and positionally disciplined, he has organised the backline superbly. His presence has allowed the full-backs to push forward without leaving gaps, and two clean sheets in succession testify to his importance.
Looking Ahead
With momentum now firmly on their side, Uganda head into their next fixtures with confidence and belief. These five players have set the tone, combining leadership, energy, and execution. If they continue in this form, the Cranes could be on the verge of a historic CHAN breakthrough on home soil.
