East Africa’s joint hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) moved a step closer to reality on Sunday night after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) formally handed over the tournament flag to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
The symbolic ceremony, presided over by CAF President Patrice Motsepe, sealed the region’s successful bid under the banner Pamoja AFCON 2027 and marked the official start of preparations for the first AFCON to be jointly hosted by three East African nations.
The AFCON 2027 flag was received by football stakeholders from the three host countries.
While handing over the flag, CAF President Motsepe urged the three nations to rise to the occasion and deliver a tournament that reflects Africa’s unity, ambition and rising global football stature.
“Over to you, East Africa. We must not let Africa down,” Motsepe said.
The Pamoja AFCON 2027 tournament is expected to strengthen regional cooperation, accelerate infrastructure development and place East Africa firmly in the global football spotlight as preparations begin for one of the continent’s biggest sporting events.
