From Local to Global: Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon’s Quest for World Athletics Approval

A section of runners take off during the second edition of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon held in September last year.

The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is one of the youngest marathons in the country and on the continent, but it is already gaining significant attention after just two editions. Ahead of its third staging on August 24, 2024, in the Western Uganda District of Kasese, the event’s route is set to be certified by World Athletics.

Certification timeline

In a meticulous process spanning two days, World Athletics route measurer Gavin Wright completed the measurement and assessment of the marathon’s route. Following the weekend’s measurements and assessments, all attention is now focused on the eagerly anticipated certification by World Athletics, expected to be finalized by the end of April.

“I will give World Athletics the route, and I will get a certificate from them,” Gavin said after measuring and assessing the route, adding, “It will take me a week or so to prepare my report before I submit it to World Athletics. I believe this route will be certified by the end of April.”

Once the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon’s route is verified, it will be among a select group of races across the continent with tracks certified by World Athletics. These races include the Comrades Marathon in South Africa, the Cape Town Marathon in South Africa, the Soweto Marathon in South Africa, the Addis Ababa Marathon in Ethiopia, the Lagos City Marathon in Nigeria, the Kilimanjaro Marathon in Tanzania, the Victoria Falls Marathon in Zimbabwe, among others.

The Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is now set to stand out from the rest of track events on the continent and across the globe because having a World Athletics’ certified route boosts the event’s prestige and offers opportunities for elite athletes to qualify and set records on a globally recognized course.

Excitement ahead of the third edition

The pursuit of global recognition isn’t merely a formality; it reflects the organizers’ strong commitment to excellence and global acclaim. There’s a sense of excitement among the marathon organizers, athletes, and even the local community because receiving World Athletics certification not only confirms the marathon’s track as top-tier but also brings numerous opportunities, including hosting elite athletes and attracting large crowds which later boosts to local economy.

“We’re eagerly anticipating this year’s edition, and we want runners to know they’ll be competing on a certified route. Additionally, Standard Chartered is increasing the prize money for the winners. We have several sponsors joining us to ensure the marathon is well-facilitated and organized,” Amos Wekesa who is the team leader of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon noted adding that major influencers from organizations like Adidas and Nike will attend the event.

Scenic and challenging course

Julius Nkuraija, the course director for the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, brings a wealth of experience in designing routes, but the assessment and measurement of this marathon’s route by a World Athletics official marks a significant milestone. With a sense of pride, Nkuraija expresses hope that this recognition will draw the attention of elite runners to the event, elevating its status within the global running community.

“Runners are treated to a variety of captivating sights and experiences along the course,” explained Nkuraija. “For instance, on the 42km route, participants commence their journey at the Equator, embarking on a scenic adventure that takes them alongside the majestic Queen Elizabeth National Park. Additionally, they have the opportunity to witness the ruins of the landslides and observe the raw materials used for copper making at the historic Kilembe Mines. Moreover, the course encompasses diverse weather patterns, with cooler temperatures in the elevated areas contrasting with the warmth of the flat surfaces.”

Route designer Julius Nkuraija captured addressing the media over the weekend.

The 42km route of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon will be the only race in the world to start at the Equator. Meanwhile , in addition to the existing 5km and 21km races, the organizers have introduced a 10km race to accommodate those who want to step up from the 5km.

Lead sponsor’s delight

Expressing his enthusiasm for the certification process, Roy Tumwizere, the Tusker Lite brand representative, remarked, “We are honoured to have this certification process start months before the third edition of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon. This recognition signifies the growing prominence of the marathon, and amazing opportunities of growth that lie ahead.”

Government endorsement and support

Hon. Kabbyanga Godfrey Baluku, Minister of State for National Guidance in the Ministry of ICT and a native of Kasese, spoke about the significance of the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, highlighting its route being assessed and measured by World Athletics: “I’m pleased that Kasese is poised to have the country’s first certified route. This not only grants the marathon international recognition but also attracts more runners and tourists to our region.”

Hon. Kabbyanga Godfrey Baluku, Minister of State for National Guidance, addresses the media on the first day of the route assessment and measuring.

He stressed the significance of the marathon, stating, “The Mt. Rwenzori Marathon serves as a gateway to understanding Kasese. It’s more than just a race; it’s an invitation to delve into our cultural and natural wealth. This occasion has transformed Kasese’s image from unfavorable stereotypes to a destination brimming with beauty and promise.”

Furthermore, he assured that the government is committed to providing adequate security for the runners and improving infrastructure to enhance the marathon experience.

More than a marathon

The Mt. Rwenzori Marathon acts as a catalyst for positive transformation within the region. By promoting tourism, stimulating economic growth, and championing environmental conservation, its impact extends far beyond the finish line. It’s a testament to sports’ power to inspire, empower, and catalyze change.
