The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has officially unveiled a brand-new trophy for the FUFA Big League, with a bold design inspired by one of Africa’s most iconic wild animals — the buffalo.
The newly introduced trophy stands at 455mm tall and is crafted in silver, a metal chosen to symbolize prestige and purity. Its unique design draws inspiration from the buffalo’s physical strength, resilience, and sense of unity — qualities that FUFA says are synonymous with the spirit of competition in Uganda’s second-tier football league.
Among the trophy’s most eye-catching features are its handles, shaped to resemble buffalo horns, which symbolize defence, power, and unity among teams. The base consists of four distinct, slightly curving tiers, mimicking the structure of a buffalo’s mouth, nostrils, forehead, and nose bridge. This foundation metaphorically reflects the league’s role in supporting the broader growth and development of Ugandan football.
FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein explained the thought process behind the design, noting that it represents more than just a reward for winning. “This new trophy embodies the true spirit of perseverance and strength seen in the FUFA Big League,” he said. “It tells a story of struggle, unity, and determination, much like the buffalo in the wild.”
The body of the trophy is segmented into three main sections: a gently upward-curving top bulb, a sleek central trunk, and the broad four-tier base. These elements come together through a multi-level design that blends elegance with symbolism, making the trophy not just a prize, but a visual representation of what it means to compete in the Big League.
This move is part of FUFA’s continued efforts to elevate the stature of the FUFA Big League, which has served as a critical stepping stone for many clubs aspiring to reach the Uganda Premier League. Recent seasons have seen increased attention and investment in the competition, with clubs like Police FC emerging as notable champions.
The unveiling comes just weeks after the release of the 2024/25 season fixtures and the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign, which saw an intense race for promotion.
