In a thrilling conclusion to Butiki League’s fifth season, Nyulya FC emerged champions, clinching the title with a total of 46 points, narrowly edging out Gyembe FC, who finished second with 45 points. The league, one of the several alumni leagues in the country, brings together former students of Kiira College Butiki.

The grand finale which is sponsored by Guinness, a brand that notably backs many other Old Boys Leagues was held on Saturday at the Jinja Rugby Grounds.

Nyulya FC displayed remarkable consistency and dominance throughout the season, triumphing over 21 participating teams to secure their place at the top.

“We are incredibly proud of the way Nyulya FC has performed this season,” said Okello Etik, Vice President of the Butiki League. “This league continues to showcase the talent and spirit of our community, and it’s amazing to see how it has grown since its inception in 2019. Congratulations to Nyulya FC for their well-deserved win.”

The grand finale also had an exciting evening programme for football fans.

Ugandan music stars Nutty Neithan, Maro, and Maddox Sematimba entertained the crowd with lively performances. Nutty Neithan had the audience dancing to his hit Walk to Work, Maro serenaded fans with his soulful Nzira Nago, and the legendary Maddox Sematimba closed the event with his timeless classic Namagembe.

Patience Aguti, Project Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), the league’s sponsor, shared her pride in the event’s success. “The Butiki League exemplifies the power of sports in bringing people together. It has been a fantastic season, and we are honoured to be part of this journey. Congratulations to Nyulya FC and all the teams for making this season memorable.”

Beyond the action on the field, the Butiki League has made significant strides in giving back to the community. This season, the league spearheaded CSR initiatives, including planting over 1,250 trees in Jinja and surrounding areas as part of its environmental conservation efforts.

Additionally, players and league representatives visited Sonrise Baby’s Home to offer support and spend time with the children as a way to contribute positively to the community.

With Season 4 in the books, the Butiki League continues to cement its legacy as a celebration of sport and the community. Fans are already looking forward to the next season, eagerly awaiting more thrilling moments on the field.

The Butiki League, which has been held annually since 2019, has become a staple in the Jinja local sports calendar, bringing together teams from 1989 to 2022 alumni.
