In a thrilling display of athleticism and community spirit, Kakira Rugby Club made a remarkable entrance onto the Ugandan rugby scene with its inaugural launch event on Friday. Led by Saidi Atibu, one of its founders, the club aims to leave a significant mark, starting from grassroots initiatives.
The launch event was highlighted by a major schools tournament, attracting over 300 participants from various primary and secondary schools in the region. With 20 schools competing fiercely in the primary touch game, St. Joseph Primary School emerged victorious amidst stiff competition.
In the girls’ category, Kakira High School demonstrated their prowess by lifting the cup, while in the men’s division, Kakira High emerged victorious against a formidable St. John’s Wakitake School team.
What distinguished the launch was the overwhelming support from the Kakira community, with droves of spectators turning up to cheer on the teams. This grassroots approach underscores Kakira Rugby Club’s commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering a love for the sport within the community.
Looking ahead, the club has ambitious plans, including fielding men’s and women’s teams for the Eastern League 7s this year, with hopes of securing core status. Additionally, they aim to compete in the 15s Eastern League and qualify for the main championship in both categories.
Notably, Kakira Rugby Club holds the distinction of being the first and only club in the newly formed Jinja District, independent of Jinja City.
The success of the launch event was made possible by the generous support of sponsors, including Jibu Water Jinja, the Uganda Rugby Union, and enthusiastic well-wishers, including Jinja Rugby Fans and other individuals.
The launch event seamlessly transitioned into the Kakira Rugby Club Inaugural Schools Rugby Tournament, held the following day at the Kakira Rugby Club grounds. The tournament, featuring primary, ladies, and secondary categories, brought together schools in a celebration of rugby excellence.
In the primary schools category, eight schools fiercely competed for the cup, with St. John emerging as the eventual champions. Kakira High School triumphed in the ladies category, while in the senior boys category, they clinched the cup against St. John’s Wakitaka in a tightly contested final, showcasing their skill and determination on the field.
For many schools, this tournament marked their first foray into competitive rugby, highlighting the courage and determination of players stepping onto the field for the first time. The enthusiastic support from fans further underscored the sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship that defined the day’s events.
Coaches associated with Kakira Rugby Club had been working with 25 schools and their teachers over the last several weeks, holding coaching sessions and introducing young students to the fundamentals of rugby. The culmination of these efforts at the tournament was a positive experience for all involved.
Amidst the excitement of the tournament, Kakira Rugby Club ensured the well-being of all participants by providing lunch for players, referees, and support staff. The inclusive nature of the event fostered a sense of unity and camaraderie among attendees, further enhancing the community spirit of the tournament.
The day concluded with a presentation ceremony presided over by representatives from the Uganda Rugby Union, Jibu Water, Kakira Rugby Club, and Jinja Media. The Kakira Rugby Club Inaugural Schools Rugby Tournament was not only a showcase of sporting prowess but also a testament to the power of community collaboration and support. With a record attendance of supporters from Kakira, the club aims to build a formidable community fan base.
