In a bid to enhance tourism and promote healthy living in Uganda, the Hon. Minister of State for Education and Sports (Sports), Peter Ogwang, unveiled plans for the Kampala City Marathon during a press briefing held today at the Media Centre in Kampala.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Government in collaboration with the private sector, aims to showcase Uganda’s rich socio-cultural and economic heritage while encouraging physical activity as a lifestyle choice to combat non-communicable diseases.
Slated for December 2024, the marathon will feature various races, including the 42.195km, 21.097km, 10km, and 5km, catering to elite and amateur runners from both local and international communities.
Scheduled as a ten-year project, the Kampala City Marathon seeks to position Kampala City and Uganda as premier tourist destinations, contributing significantly to revenue generation for the country.
Minister Ogwang highlighted the marathon’s potential to attract thousands of visitors to experience Uganda’s hospitality and long-distance running tradition. Moreover, the event promises to celebrate the nation’s diversity while promoting fitness and reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases among the populace.
Organized by the Ministry of Education and Sports in collaboration with the Uganda Athletics Federation, private sector partners, and relevant government bodies, the marathon will be managed with the expertise of Golazo, a renowned company experienced in hosting international marathons worldwide.
Minister Ogwang emphasized the marathon’s broader impact, creating opportunities to showcase Uganda’s natural beauty, cultural diversity, and entrepreneurial prowess. The event will incorporate entertainment, cultural festivities, and business exhibitions, providing a platform for local enterprises to showcase their products and services.
Acknowledging the importance of public and private sector collaboration, Minister Ogwang called upon all Ugandans to actively participate in the marathon, affirming the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for physical activity.
The marathon’s funding, initially provided by H.E the President of Uganda, underscores the government’s dedication to promoting health and well-being among its citizens. Minister Ogwang expressed gratitude for the president’s support and outlined plans for the marathon to become self-sustainable through private sector contributions and event proceeds.
