CECAFA U-23 Championship
*Uganda 1-1 Tanzania

Uganda U-23 national men’s football team, Kobs are out of the main event of CECAFA U-23 Championship after drawing 1-1 against Tanzania on Saturday, 24th July at at Bahir Dar Stadium, Ethiopia.

The heartbreak means that the team will not get the remuneration that was promised to them earlier on by local football governing body, Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).

Prior to the match, FUFA had revealed what was at stake (bonuses) for each member of the contingent after the tournament:

Reaching Semifinals meant USD500 for each member of the contingent, Reaching Final meant getting USD700 and Winning the Cup was USD1000. Each member of the Contingent (players and officials) also guaranteed of camp allowances – USD50 per day.

However, the Kobs who failed to defend the title they won in the 2019 edition will now play two more classification matches and will not get the above mentioned renumeration.

However, on Saturday, Tanzania drew first blood in the 32nd minute through  Bryason Raphael’s penalty following Peter Magambo’s challenge in the area.

Steven Mukwala who had missed a penalty earlier on later levelled matters towards the end of the first half. However it ended level even at at full time.

Uganda who played to a barren stalemate with DR Congo in their opening match finish second in a three-team Group A with two points while Tanzania tops with four and hence storm semis.
