The Legends Marathon has officially been added to the Uganda Athletics National Calendar, beginning with the 2026 edition scheduled for April 19 in Kampala.
The inclusion elevates the annual road race into the country’s sanctioned athletics framework, strengthening its technical standards, institutional recognition, and overall confidence among participants and stakeholders within Uganda’s athletics ecosystem.
Organised by Impact Sport, The Legends Marathon, now entering its third edition, continues to attract elite and recreational athletes, institutions, youth, and communities, while celebrating Uganda’s sporting heroes. The marathon has steadily grown into a platform that extends beyond race day, aligning with Impact Sport’s mission to empower athletes and the wider community towards a dignified life after active sports through skills development and purposeful engagement.
As part of preparations for this year’s edition, Impact Sport, through its Beyond The Finish pillar and in partnership with the Stanbic Business Incubator, conducted a one-day athlete entrepreneurship training last December. The session also included a mental health training facilitated by Safe Places, bringing together 40 active and retired athletes.
In continuation of the programme, another group of athletes is expected to participate in a three-day modern farming retreat later this month at Agri-partners Kaynela Farms. The initiative is aimed at equipping athletes with sustainable livelihood skills, promoting financial independence, and easing transition into life beyond competitive sport.
“This recognition marks an important step in the growth of The Legends Marathon,” said Andrew Mwanguhya, Team Lead of Impact Sport. “Being on the national calendar affirms the credibility of the event and strengthens our commitment to athlete development, welfare, and long-term sustainability. We believe sport should not only celebrate performance but also provide pathways for athletes to thrive beyond their careers.”
Uganda Athletics has previously supported the marathon, and its formal addition to the national calendar further strengthens collaboration within the country’s athletics development structure.
“Uganda Athletics is proud to officially welcome The Legends Marathon to the national calendar,” said Beatrice Ayikoru, General Secretary of Uganda Athletics. “We remain committed to supporting Impact Sport’s initiatives and the marathon’s efforts to empower athletes and promote structured opportunities for their development, both during and beyond active sport life.”
The 2026 Legends Marathon is expected to attract a wide range of participants, including professional runners, corporate teams, students, and community fitness enthusiasts. Organisers say the event will feature multiple race categories designed to accommodate runners of different ability levels, while also promoting inclusivity and mass participation.
Beyond the competition, the marathon continues to position itself as a unifying national event that honours Uganda’s sporting legends and inspires the next generation of athletes. The race also contributes to promoting healthy lifestyles, community engagement, and sports tourism within Kampala and its surrounding areas.
This year’s edition will be held under the campaign theme “Run For Your Legend,” encouraging participants to dedicate their run to individuals who have made a meaningful impact in their lives. Organisers note that a “legend” does not have to be a public figure but can be a parent, mentor, child, friend, or any personal inspiration whose influence has shaped one’s journey.
The event is expected to draw increased interest following its recognition by Uganda Athletics, which is likely to enhance competitiveness, attract greater institutional participation, and strengthen technical race management standards.
Organisers have indicated that registration details, race routes, participation packages, and partner announcements will be released in the coming days as preparations for the April race gather momentum.
