Mali and Zambia will face off today, Monday at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, kicking off their TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 campaigns.
Both teams, boasting rich continental pedigrees, are aiming for a strong start in Group A, with three points on the line and momentum at stake.
Mali enters the tournament with high expectations, led by a star-studded squad determined to break their historic jinx. The Eagles, who were runners-up in 1972 and have made several semi-final appearances, hope to translate ambition into victory from the first whistle.
Zambia, meanwhile, is eager to make an impact. The Chipolopolo, known for their speed, physical intensity, and direct style of play, will look to exploit any openings and set the tone for their tournament run.
The clash promises to be a thrilling contest, with Mali relying on tactical discipline and midfield control, while Zambia will push quick transitions and attacking efficiency. Fine margins, focus, and finishing could prove decisive in what promises to be one of the most closely watched group-stage matches.
Mali coach Tom Saintfiet expressed confidence ahead of the game: “Our first task will be against Zambia, which is considered one of the best teams in Africa. What matters to us are the three points. We must respect all our opponents and stay focused throughout the match.” Midfielder Aliou Dieng added: “The match will not be easy. We won’t talk much during this tournament; we will show it on the pitch.”
Zambia coach Musa Sichone emphasized preparation and focus: “All players are well-prepared, fit, and ready to play. We will take it step by step. Participating in this tournament is about achieving results, not just playing.” Captain Fashion Sakala added: “We are well-prepared and aim to go far. I am very excited about this tournament and confident in our squad.”
This meeting marks only the second time Mali and Zambia meet in AFCON history. Their first encounter came in the 1994 semifinals, where Zambia defeated Mali 4-0.
