Experienced winger Paul Mucureezi has earned a surprise recall to the Uganda Cranes provisional CHAN 2024 squad, replacing Masaka Sunshine FC’s James Bogere, who has officially opted out of the camp.
FUFA confirmed Bogere’s withdrawal on Saturday and swiftly approved his request, opening the door for Mucureezi to join the team just a day before non-residential training begins at the Prisons Ground in Luzira.
“James Bogere requested to step away from the provisional squad, and his decision has been respected by the technical team and FUFA. Paul Mucureezi has been summoned as his replacement,” read part of FUFA’s statement.
Mucureezi, currently playing for NEC FC, brings a wealth of experience and flair to the Cranes’ attacking line. Known for his versatility, sharp delivery, and leadership, the 31-year-old is a seasoned campaigner who previously featured for clubs like KCCA FC and Vipers SC.
His return to the national fold is seen as a timely boost for coaches Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso as they look to fine-tune their side ahead of CHAN 2024, which Uganda will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
The Uganda Cranes will begin non-residential training on Monday, June 23, at 9:00 AM in Luzira. The session marks the first step in preparing for the continental tournament reserved for home-based players.
