Uganda Crested Cranes defender Shadia Nankya has taken a major step in her football career, joining National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Washington Spirit FC.
Nankya signed a two-year contract with Washington Spirit, transitioning from Egyptian Women’s Premier League side FC Masar, where she had an impressive season. Overwhelmed with excitement, the Ugandan star expressed her enthusiasm about playing in one of the world’s top women’s leagues.
“I am very happy that finally I have joined a big team in a top league in the world. I am ready to work hard and help my team achieve the set goals,” said Nankya, whose journey to this moment has inspired many.
This move represents a significant leap for Nankya, who previously played for Uganda Christian University’s Lady Cardinals in the Uganda Women’s Premier League. She hopes her success will motivate young girls in Uganda and East Africa to dream big and pursue their football aspirations.
“Playing at the highest level in women’s football at the Washington Spirit will also serve as an inspiration to thousands of girls in primary and secondary schools in Uganda and the wider East African region,” she added.
Nankya joins a league that already boasts some of Africa’s brightest talents, including Asisat Oshoala, Ifeoma Onumonu, Barbra Banda, and Linda Motlhalo. Her presence in the NWSL underscores the growing recognition of African talent on the global stage.
