The finals (men and women) of the 9th edition of the Ndejje University Volleyball Open will be played tomorrow, Thursday, 29th April 2021 at the institute’s sports grounds in Luwero. The finals were initially slated for Sunday, 25th April but inclement weather caused delays.

Host teams are all in the finals with Ndejje Elites taking on KCCA in the women’s final while Ndejje Sharks will be up against a now rejuvenated OBB side in the men’s final.

In the women’s semifinals, KCCA beat Kampala University 3-1 while Ndejje beat KCB Nkumba 3-1. In the men’s semis, OBB beat KAVC 3-1 while Ndejje beat KCCA men’s side 3-1.

KCCA who are in pursuit for a maiden title and making a second straight appearance in the women’s final are not troubled with the fact that they’re facing a side that condemned them to defeat in the final of the previous edition.

“We’re not in a rush to win trophies ,” KCCA women’s coach Johnson Kawenyera said adding that; “we already achieved our target of reaching the final.”

Kawenyera who coached Ndejje about two years ago admits that he has little or no advantage facing his former side for ‘things’ have changed a lot since then.

With athletes returning to the court after over a one-year hiatus caused by Covid-19 pandemic, Kawenyera says that players are a bit ‘rusty’ but hopes that the Ndejje meet can polish athletes ahead of future engagements.

Ndejje Elites and Nemostars Club are defending champions in the women’s and men’s categories respectively though the latter couldn’t honor this year’s do due to their participation in the recently concluded Africa Club Volleyball Championship in Tunisia.

The Ndejje Open is the only competitive event that took place last year before the Covid-19 pandemic brought sport and other aspects of life to a halt. It’s also the first local competitive event to be held since sports activities were reinstated in September last year after a six-month ban. The Uganda Volleyball Federation (UVF) will now build on it as it (UVF) seeks to roll out its activity calendar.
