NEC dominates Vipers in UPL opener

NEC delivered a stunning performance to defeat Vipers SC 3-1 in their 2024/25 StarTimes Uganda Premier League opener on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the MTN Omondi Stadium.

The game began with NEC’s Muzamir Mutyaba scoring the first goal in the 11th minute after a brilliant passing sequence.

Vipers responded in the 25th minute, with Livingston Mulondo heading home a corner to level the match before halftime.

However, NEC returned from the break with renewed energy, and Cromwell Rwothomio, a former Vipers player, restored their lead with a well-taken goal in the 59th minute.

Just moments later, Paul Mucurezi, another former Vipers player, sealed the win for NEC after a long ball from NEC goalkeeper Hannington Sebwalunyo allowed him to outpace Vipers’ defenders and score the third goal.

The result marked a rude awakening for Vipers, who entered the season as one of the title favorites under new coach Nikola Kavazovic. NEC’s impressive display moved them to second place on the league table, tied with Kitara FC on points but trailing on goal difference.

In other matches, Wakiso Giants and Soltilo Bright Stars played out a 1-1 draw, as did Maroons and UPDF. Both matches took place on the same day, adding to an exciting opening weekend of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
