Veteran tennis coach John Oduke who is Uganda’s Captain at the Davis Cup (by Rakuten) Africa Group V currently underway at Cercle de Kinshasa is positive that his side will turn things around albeit having a bumpy start to the event on Thursday.
Overall, Uganda seeded in Pool B lost 2-1 to Lesotho after three matches but will keep fighting in matchday two following a spirited show in the opener.
Uganda men’s national champion Frank Tayebwa seemingly set the tone for his side when he beat Neo Makhakhe in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) in just 1 hour and 4 minutes.
However, that was the end of the winning run for Uganda for they lost the next two matches. Teenager Trevor Kazibwe lost in straight sets (2-6, 3-6) to Bishop Mosebi before the latter and his country mate Mpho Leshoele won by 2-1 including a bagel (6-3, 0-6, 4-6) in a doubles match against Tayebwa and Kazibwe in a match that lasted for 1 hour and 44 minutes.
“The matches were interesting but they were also tough but we managed to push them to three sets in doubles,” Oduke said.
Uganda are in action against Madagascar today, Friday and will hope to make amends for Thursday’s show.
“We hope that we will take this very seriously and see how we can snatch some good points from them,” Oduke added.
