Table-topping Vipers SC needed late drama to escape defeat at the hands of Express FC, managing a 2-2 draw in a thrilling Uganda Premier League clash played Friday at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
Express looked on course for a famous win after forward Emmanuel Wasswa netted a stunning first-half brace. The attacker struck in the 20th minute, heading home after a rebound off the crossbar, and followed it up six minutes later with a sensational curler that is already being talked about as a potential goal of the season.
However, the Venoms responded in the second half with Allan Okello reducing the deficit in the 53rd minute. The visitors kept pressing, and in dramatic fashion, substitute Gusto Mulongo struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time to ensure the league leaders walked away with at least a point.
Despite the comeback, Vipers remain without a win in their last two away games. They sit atop the table with 53 points, now just two ahead of second-placed NEC FC, who they face next week in a potentially title-defining showdown.
Vipers’ next clash against NEC could have massive implications for the title race as the season enters its decisive stretch.
Express FC moved into 9th position on 29 points from 23 games.
Earlier in the day, Lugazi FC and UPDF FC also played out a 2-2 draw in Najjembe. The hosts got their goals from Sam Ssemugugu and Emmanuel Obua, while the army side responded through experienced forwards Samuel Ssekamatte and Joseph Janjali.
That result leaves UPDF in 10th with 29 points, just two ahead of Lugazi in 11th place.
