The highly anticipated Pearl of Africa Golf Series gets underway today at the par-71 Entebbe Golf Club, with an exciting addition that sees junior golfers competing alongside professionals.
Unlike the inaugural leg in February, which focused on amateurs, professionals, and a subsidiary category, this edition includes young golfers to inspire the next generation of Ugandan golf talent.
Tournament Director Anthony Agaba emphasized the significance of this move, saying, “We believe that by doing this, we can motivate the junior golfers in Uganda by giving them a platform to showcase their talent alongside the professionals.”
The tournament comes just two weeks after Uganda’s national junior team impressed at the Victoria Cup in Kenya. Agaba, who also serves as Uganda Golf Union Vice President, sees this as a great opportunity to strengthen grassroots development and nurture young talent.
Junior challenge adds excitement
The junior golfers, selected based on their skills and recommendations from golf academies, will compete in a special nearest-to-the-pin challenge on hole 10, paired with professionals. If a junior records the best shot in their group, they will earn recognition and a special award.
“The Pearl of Africa Golf Series Junior Challenge is an exciting initiative designed to empower young golfers, foster healthy competition, and promote the game of golf in the country,” Agaba noted.
Main event structure
The tournament begins today with professionals and amateurs teeing off, with a cut set for Thursday to determine those advancing to the weekend’s decisive rounds. A subsidiary competition for men and women will also be held.
Sponsors of the event include Home Bliss, Uganda Golf Union, NBS Sport, Aquafina, Vivo Energy, MTN, Entebbe Golf Club, and Mighty Rides. The final leg of the Pearl of Africa Golf Series is set for June in Lugazi.
