A thrilling weekend of cricket awaits as Matchday 4 of the Uganda 20-Over Cricket League (UG20) gets underway, with title contenders, debutants, and returning stars all in action across the country’s ovals.
With playoff races beginning to take shape, every run and wicket now carries added weight. From Lugogo to Entebbe and Jinja, the stage is set for a weekend that could define the direction of this year’s league.
On Saturday, defending champions Wanderers face in-form Budo Cricket Club in a high-stakes Group A clash at Lugogo. Budo, riding high after two gritty wins over SKLPS, currently sit second with four points, occupying the final playoff slot. Wanderers, who have split their opening games, are just behind on points and must win to keep their title defence alive. Expect fireworks in this potential knockout decider.
In Entebbe, Group B heavyweights Rounders meet unbeaten Nile Cricket Club in what could determine the top spot. Rounders have won three of their four matches, while Nile, with two wins from two, have games in hand and are quietly pushing for first place. With both sides chasing a direct route to the knockouts, this could be one of the weekend’s most tactical encounters.
In Jinja, the match between Tornado and JACC has been postponed following the passing of Elonge Baker Otema, former Development Region Officer and patron of JACC. The cricket community in Jinja will gather to honour his memory. “Our thoughts are with his family and the Jinja cricket fraternity,” said the Uganda Cricket Association in a statement.
On Sunday, winless SKLPS return to face Tornado Bee at Lugogo. Tornado Bee are looking to bounce back after a 57-run defeat to Wanderers and need a win to stay in contention, while SKLPS are desperate to register their first points of the season. The result could shape the lower half of Group A.
At Entebbe, Ceylon Lions will be back at full strength as they take on struggling Africa Cricket Club, who remain winless in four games. Ceylon, currently third in Group D with three points, welcome back six Cricket Cranes internationals from Zimbabwe—Sumeet Verma, Gaurav Tomer, Juma Miyaji, Cosmas Kyewuta, Frank Nsubuga, and Robinson Obuya—giving them a major boost as they fight to keep their playoff hopes alive. Africa CC will be hoping for a surprise result to lift their spirits after a difficult campaign.
Group C leaders Avengers travel to Jinja to face winless Jinja SS. Avengers have been outstanding so far with five wins from six matches, led by the red-hot form of tournament top scorer Christopher Kidega. Jinja SS, however, will hope that home support can inspire a turnaround and their first win of the season.
At the GM Sugar Oval, unbeaten Kutchi Tigers face second-placed Mukono Development in what could be the defining clash of Group D. Kutchi have been unstoppable with four wins from four and now welcome back Cyrus Kakuru from international duty. Mukono, meanwhile, have impressed in their debut campaign with two wins, one loss, and one no result. A win here could strengthen their playoff chances, while a loss might leave them relying on other results.
At Serenity Oval in Kamengo, Mukono Warriors make their Division One debut against a seasoned Aboojo side. Aboojo come in with one win and one loss, while the newly promoted Warriors will be eager to make an impression and prove they belong at this level.
