Mehta Golf Club bred golfer Godfrey Nsubuga was named best of October in the golf category during the Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards session that happened on Tuesday, 7th November at Lazio Bar and Restaurant in Kololo, Kampala.
To win the award, Nsubuga beat competition from 2023 Uganda Ladies Open winner Peace Kabasweka and 2023 Uganda Professional Open runner up (tie) Ronald Rugumayo who were also nominated for the same.
Nsubuga’s recognition comes after he excelled at the last month’s Uganda Open and at the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) event that spilled into October.
Nsubuga, handicap -2.5 emerged winner in the amateur event of the 2023 Johnnie Walker Uganda Open Golf Championship held at Uganda Golf Club last month after he led throughout the tournament and held off a late charge from some of the top talent in the field to secure the win.
Nsubuga who also doubles as a member of Uganda Golf Club maintained his lead throughout the event, subjecting his rivals to the bridesmaids role. He carded 65, 69, 72 and 69 from day one to day four respectively, amassing an overall score of 13-under par 275.
No one in the history of the tournament over the last ten or so years, including in the professional category apart from Robson Chinhoi in 2019, has won the event with such a margin, meaning his winning score might take several years to break. Nsubuga beat Ibrahim Bagalana to the championship by 4 strokes.
Across the border, Nsubuga won the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) for the first time after he posted three over par 219 to top the leaderboard at the Tea Fields Trophy at the par 72 Kericho Golf Club.
Nsubuga was two shots ahead of Kenya Railways’ John Lejirma who finished second with 5 over par, and victory away from home meant that he relieved compatriot Michael Alunga of the title.
Still at the Real Stars award ceremony, four other categories were awarded, that is; football, rugby, basketball and handball with females winning all the gongs.

Agnes Nabukenya was winner in the football category beating competition from male athletes Alex Kitata and Cromwell Rwethiomio.
The Queen Cranes and Kawempe Muslim midfielder scored four goals in four games. She scored home (1) and away (2) as the Queen Cranes eliminated Mozambique in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers. She was also on the scoresheet as Kawempe Muslim beat Rines 3-2 in their opening game of the FUFA Women Super League.
Grace Auma was winner in the rugby category beating category from Peace Lekuru and Sandra Lona Amori.
At the concluded Rugby Afrique Women’s Seven’s in Monastir, Auma scored three trys for Uganda two-passed Tunisia and one against Zimbabwe. Her effort put Uganda in the semifinal spot of the tournament hence finishing third after beating Zambia 29-10 to qualify for the 2024 Olympic repecharge and the Challengers Series.
Hope Akello was winner in the basketball category beating competition from Titus Odeke Lual and Perus Nyamwenge.
Akello’s best display for the JKL Dolphins in the finals made her the most valuable player of the final. On the final day for the trophy lift, Akello averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds. She picked the best rebounder and most defensive player recognitions of the final. Akello’s final performance earned her the best centre of the season with 355 rebounds and 75 steals.
In the handball category Lillian Achola was named winner beating competition from Godwill Bingana and Hilda Abangit.
The Ndejje University star topped the month of October with 29 goals and 53 assists from the four games played. She had 13 steals, 12 turnovers and an average of only 9 missed shots.
