Scenic and challenging course
Julius Nkuraija, the course director for the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, has promised runners a unique experience. In a recent interview, Nkuraija shared insights into the course’s highlights.

“Runners are treated to a variety of captivating sights and experiences along the course,” explained Nkuraija. “For instance, on the 42km route, participants commence their journey at the Equator, embarking on a scenic adventure that takes them alongside the majestic Queen Elizabeth National Park. Additionally, they have the opportunity to witness the ruins of the landslides and observe the raw materials used for copper making at the historic Kilembe Mines. Moreover, the course encompasses diverse weather patterns, with cooler temperatures in the elevated areas contrasting with the warmth of the flat surfaces.”
The 42km route of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon will be the only race in the world to start at the Equator. Meanwhile , in addition to the existing 5km and 21km races, the organizers have introduced a 10km race to accommodate those who want to step up from the 5km.
World Athletics route approval on the horizon
Last month, Gavin Wright, the route measurer for World Athletics, completed the measurement and assessment of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon’s route. Following these measurements and assessments, all attention is now focused on the eagerly anticipated certification by World Athletics, which reportedly has been finalized and is awaiting an official announcement.

Now that the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon’s route has reportedly been verified by World Athletics, it will join a select group of races across the continent with tracks certified by World Athletics. These races include the Comrades Marathon in South Africa, the Cape Town Marathon in South Africa, the Soweto Marathon in South Africa, the Addis Ababa Marathon in Ethiopia, the Lagos City Marathon in Nigeria, the Kilimanjaro Marathon in Tanzania, the Victoria Falls Marathon in Zimbabwe, among others.
The Mt.
